Hair growth cycles & how it impacts your treatments

Lets talk about Hair Growth Stages for Brows and Lashes and how this affects the longevity of your treatments.

At Vanity House, we believe that understanding the natural cycle of hair growth is key to achieving and maintaining stunning lashes and brows. Whether you’re a seasoned beauty enthusiast or new to the world of lash extensions and brow treatments, this blog post will shed light on why your lash and brow treatments need regular maintenance.

Lets get into it!

The Hair Growth Cycle

Hair growth, whether it’s on your head, brows, or lashes, follows a similar cycle consisting of three main phases: Anagen (growth phase), Catagen (transition phase), and Telogen (resting phase). Here’s a breakdown of what happens during each stage:

Anagen Phase (Growth Phase, or as we like to describe it, the baby stage)
– This is the active growth phase where the hair follicles are producing new hair.
– For lashes, this phase lasts about 30 to 45 days, whereas for brows, it can last anywhere from 30 to 90 days.
– About 40% of your upper lashes are in this phase at any given time, which is why you continuously see new lashes growing in.

Catagen Phase (Transition Phase, aka the teenager phase)
– During this short phase, which lasts about 2 to 3 weeks, the hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla, the part of the follicle that supplies nutrients to the hair.
– Hair growth stops, and the hair prepares to shed.

And finally, the Telogen Phase (Resting Phase)
– This is the final phase of the cycle, lasting around 3 months for lashes and 9 months for brows.
– The hair rests in the follicle before eventually falling out to make room for new hair growth in the Anagen phase.

So why is this so important to understand  the hair cycles for Your Lash and Brow Treatments?

When you get lash extensions or brow treatments, it’s crucial to remember that your natural hairs are still going through this growth cycle. Here’s how each phase impacts your beauty treatments:

During the Anagen Phase, the extensions applied to lashes in this phase will stay on longer since the lash is actively growing. However, these lashes might also grow too long, making the extensions look uneven over time.

While you are in the Catagen Phase, your lashes in this phase are fragile and can shed more easily. Extensions on these lashes might not last as long, necessitating more frequent touch-ups, hence why we recommend maintaining your lash extensions every 2-3 weeks to keep them looking their best.

Lashes in the resting phase, (Telogen Phase), are more likely to shed soon. Extensions on these lashes might fall out sooner as the natural lash is ready to be replaced.

Given the natural shedding process, your lash extensions will need regular touch-ups to maintain a full and even look. On average, you can lose 1 to 5 natural lashes a day, and considering the total number of lashes (around 90-150 per upper lid), it’s easy to see how gaps can form without maintenance.

Similarly, brow hairs are constantly cycling through their growth phases. Regular brow treatments help keep your brows looking their best by removing hairs that are in the Catagen and Telogen phases and shaping the new growth.
