The Power of Positive Mindset: Women’s Views on Appearance and Mental Health

In today’s society, women often face immense pressure to conform to certain beauty standards. The media bombards us with images of “perfect” women, leading many to develop negative perceptions of their own appearance. However, cultivating a positive mindset can play a crucial role in improving women’s mental health and self-perception. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of mental health and a positive mindset when it comes to women’s views on their appearance and how they see themselves in society.

The Impact of Society’s Beauty Standards

From a young age, women are taught to believe that their worth is closely tied to their appearance. This can lead to a range of mental health issues, including low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and even eating disorders. The constant comparison to unrealistic beauty standards can erode self-confidence and contribute to feelings of inadequacy.

The Role of Media in Shaping Perceptions

The media plays a significant role in shaping societal beauty standards. Magazines, TV shows, and social media platforms often showcase a narrow definition of beauty, promoting unrealistic and unattainable ideals. This constant exposure can make women feel as though they need to conform to these standards in order to be accepted and valued by society. Often these standards are not realistic but more importantly they also set young girls up for failure and disappointment. Many young girls and women today are already seen resorting to invasive treatments including but not limited to injectables and plastic surgery, which not only form as part of a bandaid effect to the root cause of the problem but also are treatments that are too extreme and dangerous at young ages where the body, mind and genetics are still developing and adapting.

The Importance of Mental Health

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and it’s essential for women to prioritize their mental health in order to maintain a positive self-image. Developing coping strategies and self-care routines can help women build resilience against negative societal influences and foster a healthier relationship with their bodies.  At Vanity House, we believe that self love and self care are crucial elements necessary to foster positive alignment with a positive mindset and connection to self.

Changing the way you think about yourself and your appearance can have a profound impact on your mental health and overall well-being. Changing habits and the way we think and see ourselves as women can have a profound impact on how we feel in society and where we place ourselves in the world. Shifting a negative thought into a positive one is easy but many struggle to do so simply because they are still holding on to limiting beliefs about themselves.

Shifting from a negative mindset and limiting beliefs about oneself to a more positive and empowering perspective is essential for personal growth and well-being. Here are three effective ways to make this shift:

Practice Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are powerful statements that can help challenge and control negative thoughts and self-doubt. By regularly repeating positive affirmations, you can rewire your brain to focus on your strengths and potential rather than your perceived weaknesses.

Example Affirmations:
– “I am worthy of love and respect just as I am.”
– “I embrace my unique qualities and celebrate my individuality.”
– “I am confident in my abilities and trust myself to make the right choices.”

Cognitive Restructuring

Cognitive restructuring involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and replacing them with more balanced and rational thoughts. This technique is often used in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and can be a highly effective way to shift limiting beliefs about oneself.

Steps for Cognitive Restructuring:
1. Identify Negative Thoughts: Recognise and write down the negative thoughts or beliefs you have about yourself.
2. Challenge the Negative Thoughts: Ask yourself if there is evidence to support these thoughts and if they are based on facts or assumptions.
3. Replace with Positive Thoughts: Replace the negative thoughts with more positive and realistic statements.

Example:
– Negative Thought: “I always fail at everything I try.”
– Challenge: Is this true? Have there been times when I have succeeded?
– Positive Replacement: “I have succeeded in many areas of my life, and I am capable of overcoming challenges.”

Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Practices

Mindfulness and self-compassion practices can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and develop a more compassionate and accepting attitude towards yourself. These practices can be particularly beneficial in reducing self-criticism and increasing self-compassion.

Ways to Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion:
– Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath and bring your attention to the present moment.
– Self-Compassion Meditation: Practice guided meditation exercises that encourage self-compassion and acceptance.
– Positive Journaling: Write down positive experiences, achievements, and things you are grateful for to cultivate a more positive mindset.

By implementing these practices and techniques into your daily life, you can begin to shift your mindset and limiting beliefs about yourself into more positive and empowering ones, ultimately improving your self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being.

Pr

actice Self-Compassion – Be kind to yourself and treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer to a friend. Remember that everyone has flaws and imperfections, and that’s okay; it’s actually beautiful and what sets us apart from others. We are all uniquely beautiful in our own ways and we need to start celebrating these unique qualities we all have.

Focus on Health, Not Appearance – Shift your focus from achieving a certain “look” to prioritizing your health and well-being. Engage in activities that make you feel good and nourish your body with healthy foods. A relaxing and rejuvenating facial or massage can work wonders on mental health but also feel good for the body  and soul. Going on a hike or a group run with friends is also another great example of releasing those powerful and positive endorphins while connecting to others who can lift our spirits and keep us on a healthy path. Embrace your own gifts and strengths and focus on them rather than that which you cannot control.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influence – Limit your exposure to negative media and surround yourself with positive influences that promote body positivity and self-acceptance.  The media (magazines, news, social media) can be rife with negative influence and this can have an intense impact on our energy but also our mental state of being. There is so much negative happening around us that we become numb to the effects it has on us. It is important to put down the phone and have a break from social media and the media and clear your mind and shift your energy balance so that you can focus on your inner peace and harmony.

Seek Support –Don’t be afraid to reach out for support from friends, family, or mental health professionals. Talking about your feelings and experiences can help you gain perspective and develop healthier coping mechanisms.  It is 100% ok to talk about y9our feelings and when you are not ok. We are all human and we all need a little shoulder to lean on from time to time. Connection is a powerful  tool that helps us all to feel safe and grounded. When we open up and express ourselves to others, it allows us to let go of the negative space we are holding and it releases fears and insecurities that may lie deep within. Let’s normalise talking to each other and supporting one another so together we can empower each other with love and confidence.

Women’s views on their appearance are often influenced by societal beauty standards, which can have a detrimental impact on their mental health and self-esteem. However, by prioritizing mental health and cultivating a positive mindset, women can learn to embrace their unique beauty and value themselves beyond their physical appearance. Remember, true beauty comes from within, and every woman deserves to feel confident, valued, and respected in her own skin.

With love, we hope we can be a safe space for you to feel valued, appreciated and empowered to be the best version of yourself.
Love,

Daniela & the VH team
